The big fox of the Garden Bar

The Big Fox: A Heartfelt Memorial Keepsake for the Garden Bar

There is a feeling that lingers in the fabric of a well-worn jacket—the memory of a man who was always ready for a laugh and completely devoted to his family. When the family asked to create a memorial keepsake fox from such a precious item, I knew it had to be perfect.

It was a sturdy thing, lined with thick, warm sheepskin. But it was the brown suede patches on the elbows and shoulders that told the real story. They were worn smooth by years of leaning on pub counters, working on projects, and, most importantly, holding his kids and grandkids close.

To his daughter, the jacket was him. He truly lived in it.

Weaving the Memories Together

While the jacket served as the heart of the project, I knew the story needed more layers. I carefully incorporated a selection of his favourite shirts—the ones he wore when he was out and about—stitching them into the design to add colour and texture. But I always returned to those suede patches. I knew I couldn’t lose them; they were the physical texture of his history.

As I stitched, I imagined him—the way he loved a proper pint of Guinness, and the way his face would light up when his kids and grandkids filled the room. He was a man who understood that family was everything.

To make this tribute complete, I added a final, deeply personal touch: a locket placed carefully around the Fox’s neck, holding a small portion of his ashes.

A Permanent Seat at the Table

Now, the “Big Fox” sits in the garden bar, taking pride of place. It’s no longer just a collection of fabrics; it is a permanent guest at every celebration, every cold pint, and every gathering of the people he loved most.

When the laughter rises in that bar, and the glasses clink in a toast, the Big Fox is there. Wearing those familiar brown suede patches and keeping him close with the locket around his neck. It’s a beautiful reminder that while the clothes have changed their shape, the spirit of the man who lived inside them remains right where he belongs: with his family.

If you have a piece of clothing—or a collection of shirts and jackets—that carries the story of a loved one, I would be honoured to help you turn them into a keepsake that keeps their memory alive. Let’s create something special together.

Creating a lasting tribute starts with choosing the right pieces. It is often the textures and familiar patterns that bring a memory to life, rather than just the garment itself. If you are wondering how to decide which items are best suited for your own custom project, I have put together a guide on how to choose clothing for your keepsake, detailing what is most important to look for when selecting items for a meaningful transformation.”
